I begin by
making a pencil sketch on plain white drawing
paper. As you can see, the sketch doesn't have to
be perfect since I'm going to be painting over it
anyway. The sketch is just a guideline. If I
wanted to, I could make it a simple countour line
drawing with no detail at all. I find, though,
that I can draw the shape of the animal better if
I add some detail as I go because it's easier to
see how the different parts line up with one
another. This sketch was based on an old (and
public-domain) etching in an art book. |
