If I'm starting from scratch in Photoshop,
I'll usually begin by using basic geometric shapes to
approximate the shape of the animal I want to
draw. In this case, I've decided that I want to
draw a rabbit, so I draw one large oval for the
body and one small oval for the head. (To do
this, I use the Oval Marquee tool to draw the
oval, then I use the Fill command to fill it with
a solid color.) IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure that
you draw your ovals on a new, transparent layer
instead of drawing them directly onto the
background. If I were trying to draw an animal
that couldn't easily be approximated with
geomatric shapes, I would use the Paintbrush tool
to draw a sketch freehand.

Next I use the Paintbrush tool to add ears, a
nose, legs, and a tail. (They can be very rough
at this point; I'll be refining them as I go.) |
| I continue using the Paintbrush tool and the
Eraser tool to create the rabbit's shape. |

At this point I decide that the rabbit's body
needs to be longer, so I use the Free Transform
command (under the Edit menu) to stretch the
rabbit horizontally. |
| The finished sketch looks like this. Now I'm
ready to start adding shadows and highlights. |
